North Jutland researcher wins big prize: – We have been the world leader for ten years

Monday will be a day outside the familiar surroundings in the laboratory for 38-year-old Mads Albertsen.

The AAU researcher is one of the five selected, younger researchers to be honored with the EliteForsk award this year.

A prize that is awarded every year to Danish researchers in an international class.

– I’m proud, it’s a great recognition to get for the work I’ve been doing for a number of years now, says Mads Albertsen.

On Monday, he will receive the award at a presentation in Den Sorte Diamant in Copenhagen.

– I have my girlfriend and my parents over here to celebrate, and otherwise we are going home to the children again tonight. So there is a bit of practice that needs to go up, but then we try to celebrate it a bit.

Maps bacteria

Mads Albertsen is a microbiologist and researches bacteria.

– My group has been a world leader for the past ten years in developing new methods where we use DNA to look at the bacteria. We use it in many different contexts.

According to the researcher, it could be, among other things, the development of new methods to find out which bacteria patients are infected with, so that you can get the right antibiotic.

In addition, his team works to map all bacteria in the Danish nature in the project Microflora Danica.

– We know perhaps one percent of the bacteria out in nature. We then try to find out what the rest of the 99 percent do.

The EliteForsk Prize will be presented on Monday in Copenhagen by Queen Mary and Education and Research Minister Christina Egelund (M).
