Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow had annexed four regions of Ukraine that held Kremlin-organized referendums on land occupied by the Russian military.

The United States and other Western countries have called the referendums shams held at gunpoint and vowed never to recognize annexation.

But North Korean Foreign Minister Jo Chol Su defended the referendums as perfectly legitimate and “held in accordance with the United Nations Charter establishing the principles of equality of peoples”, the news agency said. official North Korean KCNA.

North Korea is an ally of Russia.

“An overwhelming majority of voters supported integration with Russia,” Jo said in a statement, according to KCNA.

On Friday, Russia vetoed a US proposal to the UN Security Council aimed at condemning its annexations.

Russia got no support for the veto, with China and India abstaining. Mr Jo said the United States was interfering in the internal affairs of independent countries and “misusing” the United Nations Security Council.

“The days will never return when the United States can use the Security Council as a shield and a means of aggression to maintain its supremacy,” said the North Korean minister.
