Anyone who visits the north of South Korea is reminded almost everywhere that the division of the Korean Peninsula is not intended to be final. Anyone traveling in the west of the country towards the so-called demilitarized zone passes a checkpoint called the “Gate of Reunification”. In the east there are tracks of an “inter-Korean” railway line that is theoretically supposed to connect North and South, even if it never went into regular operation following a rapprochement in the 1990s.
