NORTH YORK, Pa. — A meeting today at the North York Borough Office will decide the fate of a proposal that could make possessing small amounts of marijuana a non-traffic citation that comes with a $50 fine.
The ordinance, which was introduced last month, comes at a time when many communities across central Pennsylvania have set laws in place decriminalizing marijuana.
The ordinance would also impose a $50 fine for possessing paraphernalia and a $100 fine for smoking marijuana in public. Under current state laws, marijuana possession is a misdemeanor charge that comes with a maximum penalty of a $500 fine and 30 days in jail.
If passed, North York Borough would join York, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Carlisle and Abbottstown, among other communities in the state, that have marijuana decriminalization ordinances.
The meeting is set to take place at the North York Borough Office on 350 E. Sixth Ave at 6:30 p.m. tonight, March 12.
