MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Czech teenager Linda Noskova advanced to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open on Monday after Elina Svitolina withdrew due to a back injury early in the first set.

The Ukrainian player, who was in tears, requested a medical timeout when she was down 2-0 and it was 3-0 when she decided to leave the game.

“Obviously today was not the way I had planned to win,” said Noskova, 19, who upset top seed Iga Swiatek in the third round. “I feel sorry for Elina, I hope she recovers very soon.”

The first game of the match lasted 11 minutes and consisted of 20 points. Noskova broke serve and held for a 2-0 lead before Svitolina called a timeout.

When she returned, the Ukrainian player had been broken for the second time. She shook Noskova’s hand and left.
