Those nostalgic for the Game Boy are thrilled. Since February 8, 2023, the Nintendo Switch has included in its Switch Online subscription (€3.99 per month) a selection of games taken from the cartridges of the good old portable console with a monochrome screen. It’s a return to the past, an unexpected Proust madeleine. Among the stars of this selection: Tetris.
The cartridge delivered with the console
The choice of Tetris Game Boy version is obvious. He is a legend among legends. An absolute classic of video games. Why how ?
From September 1990, the Game Boy is marketed in Europe in combination with the cartridge Tetris. This is the only game usually available to new customers. The commercial success of the portable console ipso facto boosted the popularity of the game.
That’s not all. Despite the limited capacities of the machine, the adaptation of the puzzle of the Soviet engineer Alekseï Pajitnov is formidable in its efficiency. Never mind the lack of colors on the bricks. Relevant visual codes make it easy to distinguish each “tetromino”. Even the haunting music is part of it.
