For Professor Amine Benyamina, psychiatrist-addictologist, president of the French Federation of Addictology (FFA), the fact that the government does not increase the price of cigarettes next year “is not good news”. “We know that on issues of addiction, taxation is the pillar of prevention policies”he explains on Sunday September 3 on franceinfo. “The more taxes increase, the more tobacco consumption declines […] It is clearly the most effective lever”.

This Sunday on RTL, Elisabeth Borne made several announcements. Prime Minister said tobacco tax will not increase next year and confirmed disposable ‘puff’ e-cigarettes will be “shortly” prohibited. This national tobacco control plan will be announced by the end of the year.

On soon-to-be-banned ‘puff’ cigarettes, Amine Benyamina is satisfied: “This is very good news, because they were presented as a risk reduction device, at least for manufacturers”when in fact some products were aimed at young people: “With tastes and a visual that did not have the mission of avoiding consumption but of initiating in a hidden way”.

Finally, the president of the FFA said all the same that he regretted that no announcement had been made concerning alcohol: “It’s too bad”.

Tobacco causes the death of 75,000 people in France each year.
