After a first bomb alert this Tuesday morning at the Sainte-Union school in Tournai, a second alert was launched this afternoon on the site of the Notre-Dame hospital in Tournai. The author of the second alert was arrested. In both cases, these were false alarms.

A bomb threat was launched on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. concerning the Notre-Dame hospital in Tournai, dependent on ChWapi, the Picardy Wallonia Hospital Center. The neighborhood was quickly secured and the police services of the Tournaisis area, supported by a canine team from the federal police, intervened.

“The hospital was not evacuated. The searches were stopped around 5:45 p.m. The author of the call, an adult, was identified and arrested by the police,” indicated shortly after 6:00 p.m. Paul-Olivier Delannois, mayor of Tournai.

The author of the call, a patient in the hospital’s psychiatric department, used a mobile phone which was quickly traced by the police, Belga learned from a good source. The Tournai public prosecutor’s office did not wish to communicate concerning this arrest nor the facts which took place in the morning.

Tuesday morning, a first bomb alert required the evacuation of the Sainte-Union school, located along the Chaussée de Douai in Tournai. In the process, the nearby ITMA school was also evacuated. All the students and teaching staff were grouped together in the sports hall of the city of Tournai, located about a hundred meters from the two institutions. “The search of the premises also turned out to be negative,” indicated the mayor of Tournai. After the search of the premises, the students of the two schools were able to return to their respective buildings.
