To warm up before the second studio album, which is in the starting blocks The Passionate Ones is available with the Catching Chickens EP another postscript to the Nourished by Time-Debut album Erotic Probiotic 2.

Marcus Brown, who was born in Baltimore and lives in London by choice, remains true to that idiosyncratic, otherworldly, as if the 80s were incredibly catchy mix of DIY alternative R&B and bedroom pop in love with the 90s, which landed him on so many best-of lists last year: Catching Chickens Apart from the aesthetic consistency, it also maintains the established quality level over five songs in eighteen minutes.

A little more background information: “Written between 2022 – 2023 in his home studio in Baltimore, and along his world travels this past year, Catching Chickens is derived from the film Rocky, and the iconic scene in which Rocky’s trainer makes him chase and catch a flock of chickens as a test of agility. With tracks like “Hell of a Ride,” in which Nourished By Time contemplates the fall of the American empire and late-stage capitalism loneliness, and “Hand on Me,” which traces the paranoia from distrust in a post-traumatic world, Nourished By Time chronicles his own test of agility as he weaves through the motions of his newfound notability.

Hell of a Ride does this with choral textures strumming on the anachronistic electronic keyboard to the relatively lively best of a nostalgically shimmering mood of optimism (“Goodbye Baby, Goodbye“ is the catchy hook), while the funky psychedelia of Hand on Me introduce themselves with their bass line Prince bows and therefore leads a kind of chipmunk soul through the back door of dream pop in his head voice.
The contemplative Poison Soaked On the other hand, it is stirred up by a kind of rushing shoegaze wave, inspired by The Cure or that Cocteau Twinsand Had Ya Called With his guitar licks after the ringing of the alarm clock and airy synths, he creates the soft hardness of a tropical vaporwave escapism, a holiday atmosphere detached from space and time.

Best of all, however, is the luxuriant romance in the conclusively titled film Romance in Mewhere a lounge keyboard takes the pompous guitar in a relaxed manner, where the more compact EP format, subjectively speaking, suits Brown better than the album playing time: Catching Chickens acts on direct relation Erotic Probiotic 2 every bit more pointed.
The fact that all the songs seem to be put together spontaneously and yet have a carefully nuanced wealth of detail and function emotionally in eclecticism beyond pastiche is part of their trademark sound Nourished by Time.
