The name of the new town was chosen by residents and revealed this Sunday.
Bilzen-Hoeselt sera le nouveau nom de la fusion de Bilzen et Hoeselt in January 2025. The name was chosen by around ten thousand residents of the two municipalities and was announced on Sunday morning at an event in Alden Biesen.
Until the announcement of the new name of the merged municipality, the two mayors were unaware of it. “It will bea city of a new generation“, declared the mayor of Hoeselt, Werner Raskin, when welcoming residents to Alden Biesen.
The name of the merger was announced during the event presented by TV presenter Luc Appermont, a resident of Bilzen, to Alden Biesen. Many residents of both municipalities visited the site of Alden Biesen Castle. A symbolic wedding ceremony was celebrated between a man and a woman from Bilzen and Hoeselt respectively. The marriage certificate was then signed by the two mayors.
Between September 25 and October 9, the residents of Hoeselt and Bilzen were able to choose between four different names for the new merged municipality: Bilzen-Hoeselt (57%), Biesen (33%), Bivelen (3%) or Demershoven (7%). 10,077 inhabitants of Bilzen and Hoeselaren, or 26% of the population, voted.
Next Tuesday, the merger will be approved simultaneously at an additional meeting of the municipal councils of Bilzen and Hoeselt. After the expected approval, the new merged municipality will be celebrated in the main courtyard of Alden Biesen. From January 1, 2025, the merger between Bilzen and Hoeselt will be a fact and the municipalities will continue to operate together under the name Bilzen-Hoeselt.
