Serbian Novak Djokovic, ranked first in the world, exited the Indian Wells men’s tennis tournament in the third round after losing to Italian Luca Nardi.

Nardi – 20 years old – reserved his place in the round of 16 after defeating Djokovic 6/4, 3/6, 6/3, setting up a match with American Tommy Paul.

British news agency PA Media reported that Nardi is ranked 123rd in the world, making him the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic at the 1,000-point Masters tournament or one of the four major tournaments (Grand Slam).

Nardi said: “I don’t know how I kept my nerve. I think it’s a miracle, because I’m still 20 years old, ranked number 100, and beating Novak. This is crazy.”

On the other hand, Djokovic said: “It’s okay. Losing is part of sports, as you know. You just have to accept it. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I hope to win more matches and continue playing.”

On the other hand, Tommy Paul qualified after defeating Frenchman Ugo Hombre 6/4, 6/4, while Danish Holger Ruhn, Norwegian Casper Ruud, seeded ninth, American Taylor Fritz, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov qualified for the round of 16.

But Cameron Norrie, the number one seed in Britain, bid farewell to the tournament after losing to French veteran Gilles Monfils 7/6 (7/5), 6/7 (5/7) and 3/6.

Meanwhile, Russian Daniil Medvedev qualified after defeating American Sebastian Korda 6/4, 5/7, 6/3.
