Nuisances in the Alhambra District: Squatters, Drugs, and Prostitution Plague Brussels

The Alhambra district in Brussels continues to suffer from nuisances due to squatters, drugs and prostitution, the neighborhood committee told the Belga agency on Friday.

Since Tuesday evening, the former Studio Europa hotel which closed its doors at the end of June has been occupied by several Roma families with children. The old Tropicana café is also squatted by people from this community. The squats on Boulevard d’Anvers have not been occupied since this week, according to Jan Leerman of the Alhambra neighborhood committee. This would apply to the building located at 10/11 boulevard d’Anvers as well as number 23/24 occupied by drug addicts and currently under construction. However, the police cannot confirm at this time that the squatters have left the two buildings.

A brief argument also broke out on Tuesday evening between Roma families and drug addicts in the neighborhood during the occupation of the former brothel. “We have long suffered from the nuisance caused in the neighborhood by the drug-addicted sex workers who meet there every evening,” explains Jan Leerman. “The problem with the Studio Europa building is that it is a hotel and four apartments. Two apartments are for sale and viewings are also planned. The owner therefore does not want to seal off the front door,” continues the person concerned.

“We are paying the price for the institutional lasagna in Brussels where no one is responsible,” protests Jan Leeman, for whom both the Brussels Minister-President Rudy Vervoort and the federal government must urgently assume their responsibilities. “A global approach is necessary,” he concludes.
