Nursing students take the helm

Lauterbach (oz/jk) – A proven concept is going into the next round: This year’s exam course with nine nursing students in their third year of training has been taking over the nursing care of patients on Ward 1B – Internal Medicine/Cardiology at the Lauterbach Eichhof Hospital since Monday.

For four days, the participating trainees Katsiaryna, Lilly, Arlette, Jasmin, Paula, Virginia, Amir, Elisha and Gizem will be accompanied by the experienced practical instructors Sabrina Habicht, Claudia Reißig, Ilona Trabandt and Enrico Schneider in the Lauterbach hospital. In two shifts, the future specialist nurses in the early and late shifts are responsible for the nursing care and support of the inpatients of 1B. The project is medically managed by the two chief physicians in cardiology, Dr. Joachim Wilhelm and Dr. Christian Schultze, supported. In an intensive preparation period with the practical instructions in the Eichhof hospital, the students were able to independently adapt to the complex work on the ward. “In addition to the development of duty rosters, the coordination of processes and the provision of patient information, the clinical pictures related to heart disease were also on the agenda of the theoretical project phase,” explains Schneider.

Reißig is also convinced that the nine future colleagues who will take their exams in the summer are well prepared: “In every shift, our trainees are supported by two experienced practical instructors. For the patients, this means special care, since every step and every measure is carried out according to the four-eyes principle. For our nursing trainees, this support gives them security in carrying out their responsible work. They are motivated, well trained and well prepared.” Directly after the four-day practical assignment on the ward, a day of reflection takes place on the last day of the project week together with the responsible practical instructors and teachers. It is evaluated which insights were gained, how the patients reacted to them and which positive aspects the future nursing staff can take with them or incorporate into their work. “We learn to work independently, take on responsibility and consolidate existing experience – with a double bottom and lots of team spirit,” the nine trainees in their third year of training are already looking forward to the challenge.
