NV Energy has opened enrollment for its NV GreenEnergy Rider program, allowing residential and business customers to apply to match their electricity use with renewable energy resources, VEGAS INC reported. Participating customers pay an additional charge on top of their regular rates to offset their energy use with renewables under the updated program framework originally approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada in 2021.
Two Participation Tracks for Customers
The program offers two distinct options depending on customer classification and energy demand. The first option draws on existing renewable resources and is open to all customer classes, including residential, commercial, and industrial accounts. Under the utility’s tariff for Southern Nevada, individuals enrolled in this tier can select to have either 50% or 100% of their monthly power consumption paired with electricity produced at current renewable plants.

The second option is strictly limited to large commercial customers with an average annual demand of 1 megawatt or more. These larger accounts must work directly with NV Energy to identify and assign a new renewable resource to serve their load. Such participants are required to sign a special contract that must be filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada for formal approval, alongside regulatory sign-off for the underlying renewable resource if it lacks prior authorization.
Capacity Allotments and Allocation Rules
The opening enrollment period features starting allocations of up to 50,990 megawatt-hours for clients in Northern Nevada and 106,000 megawatt-hours for those in Southern Nevada. This combined total is enough to serve roughly 57 megawatts of demand. Of that capacity, about 54 megawatts of renewable resource capacity is designated for commercial customers, broken down into 16 megawatts in Northern Nevada and 38 megawatts in Southern Nevada. The remaining 3 megawatts are allocated for residential customers, split between 1 megawatt in the north and 2 megawatts in the south.
NV Energy guarantees an energy allotment to each eligible applicant if total interest within a specific service territory falls below available capacity. However, if demand exceeds available capacity in either the Nevada Power or Sierra Pacific Power service territory, the utility will conduct a lottery to assign the allotments.
Application Process and Agreement Terms
To apply, interested customers must complete, sign, and email a letter of intent as a PDF to [email protected]. Applicants must submit basic account details, including annual energy consumption figures and the specific amount of energy they wish to subscribe to.

Once accepted, participants must sign a Renewable Energy Agreement covering their chosen resource option, contract terms, pricing structures, and compliance conditions. NV Energy provides a standardized contract that bypasses the need for additional regulatory approval. Business customers are bound to an enrollment period of at least 12 months, whereas residential enrollment renews automatically until the customer submits a cancellation request.
Customers who terminate an agreement early revert to standard utility rates and forfeit the ability to enroll in future open seasons. Program pricing fluctuates based on the costs of the underlying renewable energy resources. Participants pay their regular utility rates in addition to a renewable resource rate that is updated annually and cannot be zero or negative. Program limits are capped according to a regulatory filing due on or before April 15, with new pricing and limits taking effect each July 1 and running through June 30, 2028.
