A Brand-New Gateway: Midtown Manhattan’s Bus Terminal Gets a $10 Billion Overhaul

After decades of wear and tear, New York City’s bustling midtown bus terminal is finally getting the makeover it deserves. A $10 billion revitalization project is set to transform the world’s busiest bus terminal into a modern transportation hub, offering a more seamless and enjoyable experience for millions of commuters.

Construction to Begin in 2025, Completion Timeline Set

Following recent approval of its environmental review, the project is on track to start construction in 2025. The new terminal is expected to be fully operational by 2032, with a temporary terminal slated for completion in 2028 to manage traffic flow during the construction period.

Transforming the Commuter Experience

The ambitious project encompasses more than just a new facility. It promises a complete reimagining of the terminal experience. A new 2.1 million square-foot main terminal will replace the existing, over 70-year-old structure, featuring a central main entrance and an array of street-facing retail options.

Beyond the Terminal Walls: Expanding Public Space

The revamped terminal will extend its reach beyond its walls, integrating seamlessly with its surroundings. New ramps leading in and out of the Lincoln Tunnel will enhance accessibility and traffic flow, while the permanent closure of a portion of 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues will create new public open space, revitalizing the neighborhood.

A Soaring Gateway: Features of the New Terminal

Passengers will be greeted by a soaring, multi-story indoor atrium, flooding the terminal with natural light and creating a welcoming openness. The spacious design will allow for smoother movement, reducing congestion and enhancing the overall travel experience.
