OAKA: It opens again without the polycarbonate sheets of the Calatrava roof 2024-02-23 12:36:42

The Central Stadium of the Olympic Facilities (OAKA) is completely safe for use, according to the 3rd Expert Report delivered by the president of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), Giorgos Stasinos, to the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis.

“As announced by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the work of removing the polycarbonate sheets is expected, barring unforeseen weather, to be completed within the Spring, so that at the end of April, the Stegastro will be fully functional.

At the same time, TEE experts report that an instrumental monitoring system of Stegastro will be installed and a digital twin will be created, i.e. the most modern technologically available, so that its behavior can be monitored in real time.

It is understood that the State remains consistent with what Mr. Vroutsis had announced, prioritizing the safety of athletes, athletes, spectators and workers, as if and when any problem occurs in the future, it will be able to be immediately identified and dealt with”, it is stated in the GGA announcement.

“We are pleased to announce the re-opening of the OAKA main Stadium, which had been suspended due to the exposure that made it unsafe, due to the condition of the roof. The 3rd Expertise Report we received from the hands of Mr. Stassinos, president of the Technical Chamber of Greece, allows us to put the emblematic Stadium into use. I sincerely thank Mr. Stasinos and the TEE scientists for their immediate response to the Government’s call. They undertook, as institutional partners and now experts, the very difficult task of normalizing the really very unpleasant situation that we temporarily – fortunately – experienced with the suspension of the Central Stadium and the OAKA Cycling Track. We are committed to continuing to upgrade the Olympic Complex, always having safety as our priority,” said Mr. Vroutsis.

It is recalled that OAKA has already joined the Projects of the Recovery and Resilience Fund and from which it draws 57 million for the repair, maintenance and improvement of its existing structures.

In addition, and in line with the increase in annual funding for all of the country’s National Sports Centers, which even reached +150%, 7.5 million euros were approved which will be directed towards the construction of another versatile indoor gym within the wider area of OAKA, in order to serve the permanent needs of the Federations, while the Indoor Athletics Training Center has already changed shape and renovation projects are also being carried out on the open auxiliary fields (K1-K2).

It is noted that a 4th Report of some of the TEE experts will follow, after the completion of the new valuation and the interaction with the state-of-the-art monitoring-organization system.
