There is a common belief that eating oats on a daily basis has negative effects on the health of the stomach and intestines, and this was denied by Dr. Linda Gad Al-Haq, a therapeutic nutrition consultant.

Linda said that oats are whole grains that are beneficial for the health of the digestive system, and the reason is because they contain a high percentage of dietary fiber, which helps improve bowel movement and facilitate digestion and excretion.

The therapeutic nutrition consultant explained that there is no objection to adding milk to oats, unless the person suffers from a protein allergy, because milk in this case causes stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and skin rashes.

She added that lactose intolerance is also one of the reasons that prevents eating oats with milk, a condition in which the digestive system has difficulty digesting milk sugar, which leads to suffering from constipation, bloating, gas and acidity.

Linda said that the elderly are better off eating dairy products, because the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest the sugar lactose available in milk, decreases in levels in the digestive system with age.

She concluded her speech by noting that there are healthy alternatives to milk that patients with protein sensitivity, lactose intolerance and the elderly can rely on, such as almond milk and coconut milk.
