Managing Director Grünberger to media policy: “Expected cuts in media diversity require different answers”

Vienna (OTS) For Gerald Grünberger, Managing Director of the Association of Austrian Newspapers (VÖZ), the discontinuation of the “Oberösterreichischen Volksblatt” as a print title at the end of 2023, which became known today, is an extremely regrettable but, to a certain extent, understandable step.

“Media of publishing origins are currently confronted with extremely challenging market conditions: On the one hand, they have to cope with massive cost increases in all areas, such as paper, energy, sales and personnel,” says Grünberger. “On the other hand, revenues have been declining for some time, which also contributes significantly to the difficult situation for media companies.”

Furthermore, despite repeated appeals from publishers, those in political responsibility are not creating the necessary framework conditions to secure domestic title and media diversity. “Against the background of current developments on the media market, the expected cuts in media diversity require different responses from media policy than before. The strengthening of the public market leader in the digital sector, restrictions and regulatory requirements in the sector are exacerbating the difficult development. At the same time, the announced media quality funding, which is significantly underfunded, is a long time coming. “It takes a lot more effort here,” emphasizes Grünberger.
