Occupiers announce forced exchange for Cherson in rubles

The occupiers of the Ukrainian region of Cherson annexed by the Russian army have asked the population to exchange their savings for Russian rubles.

Payment transactions in the Ukrainian national currency hryvnia will end on January 1st, crew chief Vladimir Saldo announced today in the news service Telegram. He also cited the fall in value of the hryvnia due to Ukraine’s economic problems as a reason. “It becomes paper.” All banks are obliged to exchange the money.

In the Cherson region, the regional capital of the same name and other places are once more under Ukrainian control. However, most of the area is occupied by Russian troops. The action announced in October is part of the internationally unrecognized incorporation of the region into Russian territory.
