1913: The film “The Island of the Blessed” directed by Max Reinhardt premieres in Berlin.

1963: After years of internment, Prague Archbishop Josef Beran is released by the Czechoslovak authorities. (He was later allowed to travel to Rome, where he spent the last years of his life as a cardinal).

1988: The Bavarian Prime Minister and head of the CSU, Franz Josef Strauss, dies in a Regensburg hospital at the age of 73.
1993: In Moscow, the power struggle shifts to the streets: thousands of Yeltsin’s opponents overcome the police barriers and advance to the parliament building, the “White House”. Vice President Alexander Rutskoy and Parliament Speaker Ruslan Khasbulatov call on them to storm the Ostankino television headquarters. The president declares a state of emergency in the capital.
2008: Green federal spokesman Alexander Van der Bellen is stepping down after eleven years in office. His successor will be the previous deputy, Eva Glawischnig.
