ÖFB Women’s National Team Squad Announced for Friendly Match against Iceland: Preparations for UEFA Women’s Nations League Dress Rehearsal

Team boss Irene Fuhrmann has nominated her squad for the forthcoming friendly international match against Iceland (presented by ADMIRAL).

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the ÖFB selection will meet the Scandinavians, who are 15th in the FIFA world rankings, in the ERGO Arena in Wiener Neustadt (7:45 p.m., live on ORF Sport+). It is the last international match before the UEFA Women’s Nations League, which started in September, and thus the dress rehearsal for the Fuhrmann team.

Compared to the April course, which was successful with two wins from two games, there are a total of seven changes in the ÖFB squad. Lara Felix and Laura Wienroither are both absent after suffering cruciate ligament injuries, as is Nicole Billa (persistent muscular problems), Bayern Munich newcomer Katharina Naschenweng (ankle) and Katharina Schiechtl (tendon problems). Lainie Fuchs, Linda Natter and Mariella El Sherif – most recently on call – are not available to the team boss due to the U19 European Championships in Belgium (July 18-30). In the run-up to the course, team boss Irene Fuhrmann will decide on a third person for the position of goalkeeper. Isabella Kresche is currently still suffering from shoulder problems. It is also the first course after the retirement of ex-team captain Carina Wenninger. Irene Fuhrmann will announce the successor to the 127-times team player during the course in Bad Tatzmannsdorf. On the other hand, Julia Hickelsberger-Füller, Virginia Kirchberger, Jasmin Pal and Katja Wienerroither are celebrating a squad comeback. RB Leipzig new signing Michela Croatto and Jelena Dordic (First Vienna FC 1894) are on call for the first time.

“A demanding course awaits us, since on the one hand we are required to control the load at the start of the preparation. On the other hand, we lack a lot of experience in defence. We will accept this challenge as it is, knowing full well that the personnel situation – especially in defense – is pushing us to our limits. At the same time, it is another great opportunity, especially for young players, to present themselves and show how far they have come,” said Irene Fuhrmann when the squad was announced on Monday afternoon.

From July 11th, the ÖFB women’s national team will start preparations for the fifth international match of the year in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Burgenland. The UEFA Women’s Nations League begins for the Fuhrmann-Elf with the away game in Norway on September 22nd, the first home game takes place four days later against France. The locations for the Nations League home games in autumn are currently being checked and will be announced promptly.

“We want to build on the performance of the first two courses this year and develop further in attack pressing and opening the game, among other things. Iceland play a rather straightforward football when in possession and are very well organized and structured in defence. It’s important for us to be creative and create opportunities for ourselves,” says the team boss, looking back at the forthcoming meeting in Wiener Neustadt.

The only duel with Iceland so far was at UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 in the Netherlands. With a 3-0 victory in the last preliminary round game, the Austrians secured their first place in the finals of the European Championship and secured the group victory and entry into the quarter-finals.

Tickets for the home game in the ERGO Arena in Wiener Neustadt are already available at www.oefb.at/tickets. Each ticket purchased (full price, reduced price or child) comes with a free ticket in the same category.
