offer falls but sales rise

Sales of diesel vehicles in the car market is very low and comes mainly from SUV models such as the Toyota SW4 (2,719 units) and to a lesser extent the Jeep Renegade (500 units). The segment that accumulates the most patents for diesel vehicles is that of medium-sized vehicles, of which 12.1% of their sales belonged to vehicles with this type of combustion.

In reference to light commercial vehicles, the case is the opposite of that of automobiles: three out of four registrations during this year belonged to diesel vehicles. The three best-selling models (between the three they represent 47.2% of the market) are pickups, more specifically the Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger in that order.

“In 2010 it was much more common for brands to offer their customers the possibility of choosing between diesel or gasoline vehicles for the same model. Within the Top 20 best-selling models during that year, 13 offered this option. However, its participation in the market was really low, being very far from gasoline with 7.5%”, maintains ACARA.

During the last 12 years and with many changes in the market, many brands have chosen to stop giving this possibility and by July 2022, only 2 of the 20 best-selling models had a part of their sales in diesel. “With this, one would expect a significant drop in the share of diesel vehicles over the total, but there was only a -2.1% reduction in their share,” the report mentions.

The drop in the number of diesel models among the top 20 sellers was much greater than their share. “A piece of data that seems relevant to us to explain this issue is that taking the 5 brands that sold the most, we arrived at that by 2010 they sold an average of 14.6% of their cars in diesel and by 2022 that percentage was sharply reduced to 5, 4% (-9.2 percentage points)”, says the ACARA report.

The segment that sold the most diesel vehicles this year was the SUV, reaching 3,855 units (7.5%), although in relative terms the medium range sold 12.1% of its vehicles with this type of fuel (2,714 units). . The latter suffered a sharp drop since in 2010 its registrations were 18.1% in this type of vehicle.

In this segment there is a total dominance of diesel over other fuels for this type of

vehicles. Of every 10 registrations, 7.5 were for a diesel vehicle.

“In these 12 years, participation grew slightly (+0.28%), although the number of top 20 models that offered the diesel option was reduced from 18 to 14. Within the top 20 models sold this year, nine were Pick-Ups of which five were sold only diesel, two had a large part in diesel and one model did not offer this possibility.

Then there are the small vans, of which only one had more than 70% of sales in diesel (Peugeot Partner). Closing with the last of the three most important segments, medium vans, 4 of its 5 models were sold 100% diesel”, analyzes ACARA.

Comparing the 2010 market with the current one, pickups improved their share of the diesel market by 9.1% (they cover 79.2% of diesel registrations) while the other two categories fell simultaneously by -9.0% (small vans) and -3.2% (medium vans).
