After pages on social media platforms circulated news about monitoring cases of new strains of swine flu in Egypt recently, the Egyptian Prime Minister published an official denial about it.

According to the Prime Minister’s Facebook account, the Ministry of Health and Population denied the news, stressing that there is no truth to monitoring any infections with new strains of swine flu in Egypt.

She stressed that the Preventive Medicine Sector, affiliated with the Ministry, has an integrated epidemiological and laboratory monitoring system for influenza viruses and viruses that cause respiratory diseases, through which the activity of viruses causing respiratory diseases is monitored, with immediate reporting of any unusual activity.

The Ministry indicated that this system did not detect any mutations or new strains of the swine flu virus, and appealed to citizens not to be led by these lies.

According to the Prime Minister’s statement, H1N1 influenza was first discovered in Mexico in April 2009, and was incorrectly known as swine influenza due to the similarity of many of the virus’s genes to the genes of influenza viruses that infect pigs in North America.

Due to its spread in most parts of the world, the World Health Organization declared H1N1 a global pandemic on June 11, 2009, and then declared the end of the epidemic on August 10, 2010.

Since that date, the H1N1 virus has become one of the endemic viruses in the world, and has not resulted in any subsequent pandemics. It has been included in vaccination against seasonal influenza, and Egypt was one of the first countries to introduce vaccination against it.
