Officials in Zaporizhia declare victory in the referendum on annexation to Russia

Moscow – AFP

Pro-Russian officials in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia announced on Tuesday that the “yes” vote in a referendum on its annexation of Russia was denounced by Kyiv and Western countries as illegitimate.

The electoral commission for this region confirmed that 93.11% of the voters voted for the link with Russia, following 100% of the votes were counted, noting that this result is currently still preliminary.

On Friday morning, in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, the process of voting began in the referendum on its accession to Russia. In the regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson, the question was posed in the referendum paper as follows: “Do you support secession from Ukraine, turning the province into an independent state and joining Russia?”

As for Donetsk and Lugansk, the question was formulated as follows: “Do you support joining Russia as one of the components of the (Russian) Union?”
