The Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) will elect a new chair on Friday (23 June). Currently, a coalition of the Association of Socialist Students (VSStÖ), Greens and Alternative Students (GRAS) and student council lists (FLÖ) is at the top – but that might change to some extent. Although Red and Green are to continue to be represented in the executive, the third faction is likely to be the Communist Student Association – Left List (KSV LiLi).

In the ÖH elections at the beginning of May, the VSStÖ, the strongest parliamentary group, won 15 seats (plus one). They are followed by the ÖVP-affiliated AktionsGemeinschaft with twelve seats and the GRAS with eleven (minus one). The Young Liberal Students (JUNOS) have five mandates (minus one), the FLÖ four (minus two), the KSV-LiLi three (plus one), the other competing Communist Student Association – Communist Youth (KSV – KJÖ ) unchanged and the new list Who the F*ck is Herbert? to two each and the Ring of Freedom Students (RFS) to one seat as before.

For a majority, 28 votes are needed in the 55-strong ÖH federal representation. VSStÖ and GRAS have 26 seats – at least two votes are still missing. According to reports, these should come from the KSV-LiLi. However, negotiations are still ongoing and a coalition agreement has not yet been signed.

The new ÖH leadership will take office on July 1st. The next ÖH elections will take place in spring 2025.
