A senior Guinean police officer said that there are fears of a number of casualties and injuries following an explosion that occurred at an oil facility in the capital, Conakry, early Monday morning.
According to the Al-Sharq news website, he added: “Yes, there are dead and wounded,” indicating that they are still counting the victims.
The explosion rocked the Kaloum area in central Conakry, shattering the windows of many nearby homes and forcing hundreds to flee the area.
A huge fire and black smoke could be seen rising from several miles away, as firefighters rushed to the area and several fuel trucks quickly left the warehouse, accompanied by soldiers and police. A spokesman for the government of Guinea did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
