The new Salzburg state government announces cuts in nature and environmental protection. Environmental movement protests and demands transparency.
Vienna/Salzburg (OTS) – ÖKOBÜRO – Alliance of the environmental movement warns of planned cuts in nature and environmental protection by the new Salzburg state government. The government program presented today shows little interest in improvement and some planned cuts in legal protection and participation in environmental law. A fatal signal in the midst of the greatest climate and biodiversity crisis, says Thomas Alge, Managing Director of ÖKOBÜRO: “Right now we need a strong state environmental ombudsman and a clear commitment to better nature and environmental protection. The announced restrictions are completely incomprehensible and extremely dangerous.
“
The state of Salzburg is currently being targeted by the EU Commission for at least two infringement procedures due to deficiencies in environmental protection. The lack of rights of the affected public for the protection of nature and missing or incorrect designations of protected areas show the acute need for action. The state of Salzburg must also actively implement the nationwide biodiversity strategy. Thomas Alge: “We are facing great challenges. We therefore also call on the new state government to implement these processes transparently and with public participation.
