Olympia Odos: The largest photovoltaic project on a highway in Greece – 2024-03-19 15:21:55

On the Elefsina-Corinth-Patra-Pyrgos highway, the largest program of photovoltaic parks developed on a highway in the country will soon be implemented. In total, 17 solar farms will be installed in highway maintenance center canopies and parking areas, toll station canopies and unused areas near buildings and tunnels within the Concession Project.

The photovoltaic parks along the highway will reach a production capacity of about 9.5MWp, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 1,000 inhabitants/year and will reduce gas emissions by 5,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

The first phase of the program was assigned to Omexom Hellas (VINCI Energies). Work is ongoing and the first units in Rio and Kiato will be commissioned in the coming weeks. This first phase of the program will be completed by the fall.

A second phase development was awarded to IXION Energy (AVAX) and is already under study. With this comprehensive plan, the goal of achieving 100% energy self-sufficiency of the highway will be achieved by the end of 2025.

Panagiotis Papanikolas, director of VINCI Concessions in Greece, president and CEO of Olympia Odos, said: “Following the ambitious program to increase the number of electric chargers along the length of the Elefsina-Corinth-Patra highway, which was recently launched, we are very proud to announce a new environmental project : the largest program of photovoltaic parks on a highway in Greece. We are committed to demonstrating environmental performance with immediate positive impact and contributing to the national decarbonisation target.”
