Olympic champion Kiesenhofer in individual time trial EM fifth

Anna Kiesenhofer missed a medal in the individual time trial at the European Cycling Championships in Munich on Wednesday. The Lower Austrian, who sensationally triumphed at the Olympic road race in Tokyo a year ago, needed 32:00.87 minutes for the 24 km and finished fifth.

The 31-year-old missed the podium by a good 33 seconds. Christina Schweinberger finished eighth. The Swiss Marlen Reusser defended her title.

Kiesenhofer, who started fourth from last, stayed just outside the top three throughout the race. After 15 km she was in fifth place and maintained this position to the finish. The 25-year-old Schweinberger, who was able to distance Kiesenhofer at the state championships, showed a courageous race and made a strong top 10 place with a time of 32:32.76 minutes.

Reusser (30:59.90) repeated last year’s success and distanced world champion Ellen van Dijk from the Netherlands and her compatriot Riejanne Markus in second and third place.
