Olympics, Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery strengthen partnership

Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery, parent company of Eurosport, are strengthening their partnership in view of the entry into the heart of the sporting season which has its strong point in the Olympics. And the big news arrives precisely on the Paris Olympic Games, with ten dedicated Eurosport channels for Sky subscribers.

«To the two channels Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 – we read in a joint note – there will be added 8 new channels entirely dedicated to the event, one of which in 4K, on which many other sports disciplines can be followed. In total, there will be more than 1000 additional hours of live broadcast available on Sky and much content will also be on demand.” The 4K channel will now launch on May 26 with Roland Garros and will remain active for the two weeks of the tournament.

The Olympics on Eurosport

A new agreement, therefore, establishes the expansion of the collaboration between the Comcast media company and Warner Bros. Discovery – led in Italy by Alessandro Araimo – which is about to close other types of agreements with other platforms such as Timvision, that through the distribution of discovery+ coverage of the entire event would be guaranteed, over 3000 hours live. It must be said that the American giant led in Italy by Alessandro Araimo has been focusing on audiovisual broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games for some time now. After having acquired them for 2018-2024 at a European level, on the same scale the US media giant born from the purchase of WarnerMedia by Discovery at the beginning of 2023 has revealed that it has acquired the streaming and pay rights for the editions from 2026 (therefore the winter ones of Milan-Cortina) to 2032.

Sky and the focus on sport

As for Sky, the agreement is evidently functional to the media company’s role as a distributor of valuable content through its platform. And the fact that it is sports content is in turn emblematic of the commitment that Sky itself, led in Italy by Andrea Duilio, is highlighting on this segment, also considering the en plein on European cups on the basis of which Sky will be from next season to broadcast them exclusively (except for the Wednesday match which, as for this cycle, will be exclusive to Amazon Prime Video)
