Omicron: contagious for 3 days | Nachrichten.at

According to an analysis, children infected with the Omicron corona variant are still contagious for around three days on average after testing positive. On the fifth day, the majority are no longer infectious, write US researchers in the journal “JAMA Pediatrics”. Omicron sublines such as EG.5 and XBB.1.16 are currently predominantly circulating in Austria.

The professional association of pediatricians currently recommends that with Corona, as with normal colds, keeping a child at home as long as they feel sick, have a fever or diarrhea or are vomiting. After 24 hours without symptoms, they can go back to kindergarten or school. The current study also showed that almost a fifth of the children recorded were still infectious on the fifth day, and almost four percent even on the tenth day.

Finding the right amount for the quarantine is important: it is important to protect the other children, but at the same time not to make the time out unnecessarily long for the child concerned – because of the loss of lessons, but also because of the possible psychological stress.
