On May 1st: Art project flags the Vienna River

Flags can express political sentiment or national identity. As a counterweight to the flags fluttering on May 1st, museum in progress, in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, is launching the art project “raising flags” on the Wien river and on the Stubenbrücke today. Flags designed by 26 international artists will be on display for six months.

The curators Alois Herrmann and Kaspar Mühlemann Hartl invited Thomas Bayrle, Christian Eisenberger, Shilpa Gupta, Peter Kogler, Laure Prouvost, Hans Schabus and Eva Schlegel, among others, to design flags. As a result, the bridge over the Vienna River, which was long characterized by Franz West’s lemur heads, “will be won back for art,” according to a broadcast. The motifs are also to be presented in virtual exhibition spaces and in the media spaces of newspapers and magazines.

Later, the flags should also be seen at other locations. “Institutions, companies, but also private individuals who have the opportunity to display a flag publicly” are invited to participate in the project.
