by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

A national polio vaccination campaign (for children aged 3 to 6) will take place from February 24 to 26.

Togo receives assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

More than 760,000 children are affected, said the Ministry of Health.

Caused by PVS (wild poliovirus), poliomyelitis is an acute and contagious infectious disease that mainly affects children, attacking the spinal cord and can cause irreversible paralysis.

It was widespread all over the world until the discovery of a vaccine in the 1950s. The richest countries quickly had access to it, but Asia and Africa have long remained important infectious foci.
