Many fans of the women’s national team are hateful: on Saturday, Swiss canceled the only direct flight to Manchester, where the Swiss women’s first European Championship game against Portugal will take place in the evening.
Flight LX390 was scheduled to depart at 7.05am on Saturday morning. One of the fans was at the airport an hour and a half beforehand. Then suddenly it was said: Nothing works anymore. “I only saw it on the monitor at the airport,” says the affected Nati supporter to Blick.
“Some cried”
“There were a lot of fans and family members of the players. Some of them cried.” There was no progress at the helpdesk counter. “I think only one person worked there,” says the reader reporter, who does not want to be named.
The Nati supporter finally found another way to get to Manchester. “So it might be enough for me in the second half.”
Another reader reporter complains about the poor service at the airport: “We had to wait two hours at the counter before it was our turn. And then there was no option for us to reach the football stadium in time,” she writes. “We are huge fans of the national team and have booked extra flights with Swiss. We are so angry, disappointed and sad!”
Hundreds of flights canceled
Another supporter says: “That would not have happened with men’s river ball.” The flight cancellation is particularly problematic because Swiss is the sponsor of the national soccer team.
Swiss media spokeswoman Sonja Ptassek told Blick: “The flight was supposed to be operated by Helvetic Airways, but had to be canceled for operational reasons”. A replacement flight could be found for some passengers on the same day, but unfortunately this was not possible for others. “Since our resources are currently limited, we could not replace the flight,” Ptassek continues. “We very much regret that some affected fans cannot now watch the game live.”
Because Swiss dismissed numerous employees due to Covid and was unable to hire new staff quickly enough when the pandemic measures were lifted, it already had to Canceled hundreds of flights. Airline and ground staff shortages are creating chaos at airports around the world.
