St. Pölten (OTS) – In Burgenland, “Land and People” is researching the secret of the winter bee. Although the bee colonies hibernate, they do not sleep, but sit pressed together in their hives and use as little energy as possible. The winter bees are of great importance; their only job is to bring the bee colony safely and warmly through the winter and thus ensure their continued existence. They live up to six months, while summer bees live only 35 days on average. Life in beekeeping is comparatively busy in winter. In Lockenhaus in Burgenland, honey, beeswax and propolis are processed at the Katona family’s organic bee farm. The honey maker Simon Tötschinger in Jois shows us how honey, used internally and externally in the cold season, can develop its effect on health and beauty.

And “Land and People” also starts the New Year on January 13th with these topics:

*Unique school on organic course
With its focus on “organic farming,” the Schlägl agricultural college in Mühlviertel, Upper Austria, is the only one of its kind in Austria. In addition to young people, adults are also taught, which is also possible in the evenings.

*Superfood from the windowsill
Lots of vitamins and particularly climate-friendly: sprouts and microgreens are considered superfoods. “Land and People” in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria finds out how they can be grown and processed themselves.

*Versatile alpaca wool
In Carinthia, “Land and People” shows how the wool from alpacas is processed into textiles and soap. A visit to the alpacas on Josefsberg and to a soap maker in Klagenfurt.

*Fantastic winter trip
Exploring the impressive mountain world of the Schladminger Untertal in Styria by horse-drawn carriage is a special experience. Even if the snow is already melting everywhere else, it is usually still deeply snowed in the Untertal.
