As of this Sunday, December 24, the 600 inhabitants of Île-aux-Moines, in Morbihan, are without a general practitioner. Despite the efforts made, the mayor is struggling to find a replacement.

Christmas has a slightly bitter taste this year for the more than 600 inhabitants of Île-aux-Moines, in Morbihan, in Brittany. This Sunday, December 24, they saw their only general practitioner permanently close the door of his office, without a replacement having been found.

If this island, located five minutes by boat from the coast, near Vannes, offers a heavenly setting, it imposes difficult working conditions for this health professional.

“The most important obstacle is that of on-call obligations which constitute an interesting additional income, but in return, which forces doctors to be on the island 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, because we suffer from this rupture of territorial continuity”, explains the mayor of the island, Philippe Le Berigot, at the microphone of Europe 1.

Connections to reach the coast are also limited: from October to March, they are interrupted after 7:30 p.m. and resume at 7 a.m. the next day.

“In an emergency situation, you will have to dial 15”

“Nothing guarantees that we will find a new permanent doctor, even if all the elements are met. In an emergency situation, we will have to dial 15,” underlines the mayor, Philippe Le Bérigot, in Ouest-France.

In addition to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) which is working to remedy this medical desert where the average age exceeds 60 years, the city councilor puts the means on the table to make his island attractive: a fully equipped office , a company car and accommodation will be made available to the doctor upon his arrival.

For a smooth transition, the former Ilois doctor, who will continue to practice in Plouharnel, has however decided to continue to follow the residents of the island’s Ephad, reports Ouest-France.
