1936
The gendarmerie violently breaks up a gathering of striking tobacco workers in Thessaloniki. 12 dead and 32 injured are the tragic toll of the deadly clashes. Inspired by the dead tobacco workers, Yiannis Ritsos will shortly after write his poem “Epitafios”, which will be set to music by Mikis Theodorakis.
1950
Franco-Luxemburg politician Robert Schumann presents his proposal for the creation of a united Europe. His proposal, which went down in history as the “Shuman Declaration”, is considered to have contributed to the creation of the European Union.
1956
A militant pro-Cyprus rally organized in Athens ends in clashes with the police. Four protesters and a police chief are killed and 265 people are injured, 165 of them by bullets.
1967
By a joint decision of the Ministers of the Interior, Stylianos Pattakos, and Public Order, Pavlos Totomis, entry to Greece is prohibited to “any polluting and unkempt or wearing a beard or long hair” tourist. The same decision bans female tourists in miniskirts from entering, although a later announcement clarifies that the measure is limited to schoolgirls.
1974
Young Bruce Springsteen appears in concert at Harvard University, and journalist John Lando writes in Rolling Stone magazine: “I saw the future of rock and his name is Bruce Springsteen.”
