one booster dose per year will be needed, says Pfizer CEO

Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, believes that the Omicron wave “will be the last with so many restrictions”

Will the restrictions against Covid-19 soon be over? According to Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, the wave of Omicron “will be the last with so many restrictions”. “The most likely scenario is that the virus will continue to circulate for many more years. It is a virus that has spread all over the world and it is very difficult to get rid of it. But I think with the tools created by science, this wave will be the last with so many restrictions,” he said on BFMTV.

The CEO of Pfizer notably mentioned the ongoing projects of the laboratory to better counter the virus in the future. “We are already working on a new version of the vaccine which will not only cover the old variants but also Omicron, to fight against contamination, hospitalizations and deaths”, he specified. The results will be known in March.

“One dose per year”

On the rhythm of booster doses, Albert Bourla said that the Comirnaty vaccine (name of the Pfizer vaccine) would require an additional injection each year to protect against the virus. “For me, it is important to have three doses for a complete vaccination and then one dose per year, except for immunocompromised people who could be vaccinated quarterly,” he explained. “We are doing tests to find out the effects of the fourth dose but we don’t have the results of these tests yet. We will have them in March, we will also have data on the effectiveness of the three doses of vaccine. »

Pfizer also announced an investment of 520 million euros over five years in research, innovation and production of treatments against Covid-19 in France. The American company has notably chosen to produce its treatment at the Novasep laboratory in Mourenx, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
