In a random sample of 10,000 webpages collected in July 2026, one-in-ten show clear signs of being written or substantially edited by artificial intelligence. The Rising Tide of Machine Content

The conversation around synthetic text has moved from abstract speculation to measurable metrics. Research published by Five Percent indicates that pure AI-generated content surpassed human-written material on the web, with a massive surge following the rollout of advanced language models (BGR). While the pace of that initial expansion plateaued by mid-2023, the baseline volume of machine-crafted output remains historically high.

The study utilized Surfer’s AI detection tool, classifying any webpage as AI-generated if the algorithm flagged more than 50% of the text as machine-created. To validate their baseline, the researchers tested 6,009 articles generated by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, achieving a 99.4% detection accuracy rate. They also scanned nearly 16,000 articles published between 2020 and 2022—predating the public release of ChatGPT—to establish a 4.2% false-positive rate for human-authored text (BGR).

Yet, analyzing raw text generation captures only part of the ecosystem. The research notes that content heavily edited by humans after initial AI generation was excluded from the strict “generated” category, suggesting the true footprint of AI-assisted writing could be significantly larger (BGR).
