The N-VA wants to give every Flemish two votes in the legislative elections: the first for a local politician and the second for a big name. In any case, this is one of the proposals that Bart De Wever’s party will defend during its congress scheduled for the weekend of May 13.
The members of the N-VA will express themselves there on a hundred proposals which they will be free to modify, with the exception of those relating to confederalism which cannot be amended. In the meantime, the party presented, on Monday, the chapters devoted to justice and democracy. The N-VA notably advances a reform of the Flemish Parliament, whose members would go from 124 to 100.
Seventy of them would be elected in local electoral districts while the other 30 seats would be reserved for big names. A resident of West Flanders might thus vote for an Antwerp MP. In this configuration, the Chamber would be composed of representatives of the parliaments of the federated entities. Finally, the N-VA wants to make appeals to the Constitutional Court possible, which would allow a decision of the Court to be overturned by parliament with a two-thirds majority.
