Last week, some 200 pupils and teachers at the Primary School of La Barre, in Lausanne, suffered from particularly cold conditions. It was 9 degrees in the locker rooms and 14 degrees in the classrooms.

The situation affected ten classes, reports “24 hours”. Due to work that should last until the start of the 2024-2025 school year, these classes are in exile in a complex of portacabines. There, even with a heating pushed to the bottom, the heat peaks at 15 degrees in the event of extreme cold.

Asked by the Vaud daily, some students say it was quite bearable. Others, on the contrary, say that it was “horrible”. “I have a friend who wrote with her gloves she was so cold. Some even brought blankets, ”says a student.

Auxiliary heaters

The problem, which had already occurred in December, is however now resolved. The City of Lausanne delivered auxiliary electric heaters at the end of the week and the thermometer now shows 19 to 20 degrees in the classrooms.

However, the authorities are still looking for a more lasting solution to solve the problem of the faulty central heating of the premises. “The City is in constant contact with the architects responsible for a lasting solution to be found as soon as possible, in particular thanks to an intervention at the level of the heat pumps”, notes Nicolas Bohnet, spokesperson for the Direction of the childhood, youth and neighborhoods.
