“Only get paid twice a year”

Real Madrid reportedly has a different salary structure than other football clubs. This is what former Irish international Andy Townsend claims.

Accordingly, the Royal players are paid twice a year. Normally, professional football clubs follow the model where salaries are paid monthly or occasionally weekly.

“Do you know the guys at Real Madrid? I know because Michael Owen told me this before: When you sign for Real Madrid you only get paid twice a year,” Townsend explained TalkSPORT.

The former Chelsea player added: “It’s quite a chunk that goes in there, but I’m pretty sure they get paid twice a year.”

This would also mean that the players would do everything they might to score points with good performances straight away. “You don’t want to upset them because you want to make sure that when December comes and the first chunk goes into your old account, you’ll be okay,” Townsend said.

Owen played in Madrid for one season in 2004/05. It is not known whether the salary model has changed since then.

New signing Jude Bellingham, who signed a six-year contract, is expected to earn around 250,000 euros per week. After six months he would receive 6.5 million euros in one go.
