Syracuse University softball dropped the series finale to Louisville on Saturday, losing 7-3 at the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Orange had won the first two games of the weekend series but fell short in the deciding match, ending their hopes of advancing further in the conference tournament.
The loss marked a turning point in what had been a promising weekend for Syracuse, which entered the tournament with momentum after a strong regular season finish. Despite the setback, the team showed resilience in earlier games, including a key offensive performance that briefly shifted momentum in their favor during Saturday’s contest.
In the top of the third inning, Syracuse senior outfielder Ella Knight hit her first home run of the day, a solo shot to left field that cut Louisville’s lead to 4-2. The blast came after a leadoff single and moved Syracuse within striking distance early in the game.
Official box score from Syracuse Athletics shows Knight finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, providing one of the few bright spots in an otherwise challenging offensive outing for the Orange.
Louisville starter Alex Hartman worked through early trouble, settling in after Knight’s homer to retire the next six batters she faced. The Cardinals added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, exploiting gaps in the Syracuse defense to extend their lead to 7-2 before a late-inning rally made the final score 7-3.
Syracuse pitcher Mia Thompson took the loss, dropping to 8-5 on the season after allowing five earned runs over six innings. She struck out five but walked three and gave up eight hits, struggling with command in crucial moments.
Despite the loss, Syracuse head coach Melissa Lombardi praised her team’s effort in postgame remarks, noting their competitiveness throughout the weekend. “We fought hard in every game,” Lombardi said. “Ella’s power at the top of the order gave us a chance, and we’ll take that momentum into the offseason.”
The Cardinals improved to 38-14 overall with the win and advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals, where they will face Florida State. Syracuse concludes its season with a 32-22 record, marking one of the most successful campaigns in program history under Lombardi’s fourth year as head coach.
Looking ahead, Syracuse returns several key contributors for next season, including Knight, who earned All-ACC honors for her performance this spring. The program will begin fall practice in August with goals of building on this year’s NCAA Tournament appearance and continued ACC competitiveness.
