Former OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Monday in a Miami courtroom, resolving a high-profile case stemming from the 2022 fatal stabbing of her boyfriend, Christian Obumseli, inside their luxury Edgewater apartment. Clenney was sentenced to six years in prison followed by five years of probation.
The plea brings a definitive legal end to a case that captivated the attention of South Florida and the country for more than four years. Appearing in an orange jumpsuit without makeup, 30-year-old Clenney accepted the lesser charge of manslaughter with a deadly weapon instead of facing a second-degree murder trial, according to prosecution statements delivered to Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Andrea Ricker Wolfson.
Prison Time and Credit for Years Served in Miami
Under the negotiated agreement, Clenney received a sentence of six years in state prison followed by five years on probation. Because she has remained jailed since her August 2022 arrest—initially captured by authorities on the Big Island of Hawaii before her extradition to Florida—she will receive credit for the nearly four years already served at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, meaning she has roughly two years left to spend behind bars.
Miami-Dade prosecutor Shawn Abuhoff told the court that Clenney is taking criminal responsibility for her action. In addition to her prison term and subsequent probation, which carries a 30-year prison penalty if violated, the court mandated that Clenney complete a mental health and substance abuse evaluation along with any necessary treatment while on probation.
The Fatal Stabbing at One Paraiso and the Defense of Self-Defense
The tragedy unfolded on April 3, 2022, inside the upscale One Paraiso high-rise located at 3100 NE Seventh Ave. in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood. Investigators established that Clenney stabbed Obumseli inside her condo unit.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Clenney’s defense team maintained that she acted strictly out of self-defense during a toxic and combative domestic incident. Defense attorney Frank Prieto argued that his client was a victim of battered women’s syndrome and was forced to take action in the defense of her life. Defense lawyers pointed out that Clenney immediately dialed 911 rather than letting her partner bleed out, and a defense-hired medical examiner testified that Clenney had thrown the kitchen knife from a distance.
Prosecutors aggressively contested the self-defense narrative. The state pointed to autopsy findings showing a deep puncture wound to Obumseli’s chest that sliced his subclavian artery—an injury forensic experts argued could only have been caused by an up-close and personal stabbing rather than a thrown blade.
Digital Evidence, Surveillance Footage, and a Volatile History
The state’s case relied on a substantial collection of digital evidence detailing a volatile relationship that began in 2020. Prosecutors released disturbing surveillance footage captured in February 2022 inside the apartment building’s elevator, showing Clenney repeatedly hitting Obumseli as he attempted to restrain her hands and defend himself.
Evidence presented in court also included audio recordings captured by Obumseli during their frequent arguments.
Family Grief and the State Attorney’s Statement on Accountability
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle confirmed that the resolution was reached in full consultation and approval of Christian’s family, allowing them to avoid the uncertainties of a trial.
“This plea was reached in full consultation and approval of Christian’s family. The Assistant State Attorneys handling this case have remained focused on the core evidence that Clenney stabbed Christian Obumseli as part of a pattern of escalating violence toward him. While nothing can heal the wounds caused on that day in April, I hope today’s guilty plea brings his family a measure of justice too long denied.”
During the hearing, Obumseli’s cousin Karen Egbuna addressed the court while surrounded by grieving relatives, including Obumseli’s mother, who learned of her son’s death when hospital doctors called her at work to ask for consent to donate his eyes.
