Open-Air Purkersdorf: A Thunderstorm Rains on the Austropop Concert, But Success Prevails

The main act with Gert Steinbäcker was on. The STS star had already announced Thomas Spitzer – EAV mastermind and productive songwriter and producer – with whom he had once founded a youth band in Styria, when Mayor Stefan Steinbichler had to interrupt the concert. A storm front with lightning and hail was rolling in, so that it was no longer possible to think of a safe further course of the event. The stage had to be cleared within a minute, almost at the same time as heavy rain started to fall. The square with thousands of spectators was also swept empty within a few minutes thanks to the support of the Purkersdorf volunteer fire department and the police.

Up to this point in time, there had been an excellent atmosphere on the main square in the Vienna Woods. The band MaSchurAnz, with lead singer Mandana Nikou, was responsible for heating up the crowd, which had already come in large numbers early on. This was followed by a Georg Danzer tribute with Thomas Stipsits and Ulli Bäer. In the meantime, the entire spectator area was practically filled to the last seat. And the suspense would have gone even higher. In addition to Spitzer, “there would have been a surprise guest for the audience. Christian Kolonovits was supposed to play the piano together with Gert Steinbäcker,” said Niki Neunteufel, who was still ailing the day after the demolition, and who has been organizing the event for more than ten years with a lot of passion and professionalism and with great support from the municipality, describing the plans for the conclusion of the concert of superlatives. “Another ten minutes and all the great moments would have been over. But fortunately nothing happened and everyone came home safe.”

But despite the high point being swept away by the storm, the open-air was a complete success. It wasn’t just the on-site crowds that were enormous. For the first time there was also a live broadcast of the event on ORF III. And this with a record viewer rate, which ORF 1 could not beat on Saturday evening and an enormous number of views in the ORF-TVthek. “We showed what we’re capable of. It keeps going. Together we will go through thick and thin!” Niki Neunteufel was already looking to the future with a fighting spirit.
