Vienna (OTS) –

Dear Mr. Federal Chancellor Nehammer, dear Mr. Vice Chancellor Kogler, dear Justice Minister Zadić, dear Mr. State Secretary Tursky,

The Austrian creative economy is the economic infrastructure for domestic artistic creation. We create a red-white-red identity, but we are also an important economic factor. Our sector includes tens of thousands of creative people, performing artists, publishers, film producers, music labels, recording studios, media companies, sales companies, trading companies, digital distribution platforms and much more. In total, we secure almost 300,000 jobs in Austria and directly and indirectly generate an annual production value of 34.12 billion euros.

Artificial intelligence is the future topic par excellence. With the Artificial Intelligence Act, the EU has succeeded in creating the world’s first cross-state set of rules for artificial intelligence. Balancing all the interests involved was not easy, but the AI Act now being passed is a balanced compromise and definitely a step in the right direction.

We would now like to urgently request that the Permanent Representation of Austria approve the final negotiated text of the Artificial Intelligence Act in the Coreper meeting on February 2, 2024. Under no circumstances should Austria – as rumored – take part in the experiment of a blocking minority that could overturn the hard-won compromise.

IT companies do not have to worry about over-regulation, consumers benefit and this text offers a minimum level of protection for authors, artists, cultural and media professionals. Data protection issues were also discussed intensively in the negotiations. The EU institutions Council, Commission and European Parliament adopted the AI Act in December 2023 as part of an agreement in principle.

Above all, the basic rules for the operation of generative AI systems set out in the AI Act are vitally important for the future of all creative and media industries!

Please agree to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act!
