OpenAI has temporarily suspended new subscriptions and upgrades for its top-tier 200 US-Dollar monthly ChatGPT Pro plan, known as Pro 20X, due to infrastructure strain caused by demand for the newly launched GPT-6 Astra model.
OpenAI product lead Thibault Sottiaux warned on the social platform X that the Pro plan places the heaviest burden on the company’s systems, forcing the company to throttle access. According to TechCrunch reporting from September 10, 2026, the temporary freeze applies directly to anyone attempting to buy into the tier for the first time. Existing Pro 20X subscribers, however, retain full access to their accounts.
Infrastructure Bottlenecks and Tier Stratification
Launched on September 3, 2026, GPT-6 Astra rolls out across multiple service levels, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, Business, and the developer API. The model was promoted as an advancement in reasoning, coding, and the use of computer tools.
The decision to slam the brakes on new sign-ups marks an attempt at capacity management. As analyst Chopra noted in coverage by CIO.com, capacities in the high-end range are being rationed. OpenAI has not specified when the temporary pause will lift or how many daily sign-up requests were made.

For engineers and power users locked out of the Pro 20X tier, options remain. The intermediate 100 US-Dollar Pro plan remains open to new subscribers, offering a 5x usage limit compared to standard accounts. Alternatively, developers can access underlying capabilities via the API.
Thibault Sottiaux described halting top-tier registrations as the smallest possible step to ensure the widest possible access to the services. Until additional capacity is added, anyone looking to purchase the 200 US-Dollar tier will have to wait out the freeze.
