Opération Enfant Soleil: improved care and an optimized work environment at the CHUL

The CHUL’s new pediatric ambulatory care unit, inaugurated in June 2022, allows care teams to be much more efficient and patients to be more comfortable, thanks to the involvement of Opération Enfant Soleil.

On the sidelines of its largest annual fundraising campaign, the organization Opération Enfant Soleil offered a visit to the Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit (USAP) of the Center mère-enfant Soleil at the CHUL in order to raise public awareness of the importance of foundation in hospitals.

The care team and the management of the USAP agree that the reorganization of the unit, whose investments represent $3 million, has improved its efficiency.

Dr Marc-André Dugas, intensivist and head of the USAP pediatrics department, says he is very pleased with the efficiency gains, particularly in the organization of staff, with this completely refreshed unit.

“It has completely changed our environment”, immediately launches Dr Dugas. The difference with the old unit, firstly, is the number of beds. We have increased our capacity, we are able to see more patients”.

In the past, the unit could receive between 80 and 100 young patients per week.

“Now it’s 120 to 150 patients a week. A gain of 30%”, continues Dr Dugas.

For Jonathan Gendron, Executive Director of Opération Enfant Soleil, it is important for the population to be able to concretely see the impact of donations and what can be achieved afterwards.

“It’s a pledge to see all the concrete things that can be brought into the lives of children, and even staff, and the importance of the generosity of people everywhere in Quebec,” he underlines.

The USAP project was 100% funded by the foundation.

Lexie Gendron, 8 years old, has been treated at the USAP for four years for spinal muscular atrophy. His mother, Aurélie Pouliot, is more than delighted with the changes made.

“We couldn’t wait for it to open,” she says.

She particularly appreciates the better layout of the unit, which allows for more space and fewer unnecessary trips.

“It’s really different. Before, the cubicles were smaller and it was warmer,” she observes. There, it is centralized in the same place and we see that, for the staff, it also makes a difference.

Lexie, for her part, only has eyes for one thing in the unit.

“It’s the treasure chest,” she says smiling.

The Opération Enfant Soleil Telethon will be broadcast live on TVA on Sunday, June 4 from 12:30 p.m.
