Operation or not for Cade Cunningham? Dilemma in Detroit

Potentially the victim of a stress fracture in the tibia, Cade Cunningham has not set foot on a parquet floor for more than two weeks already. And let’s be real, we can’t expect a return of the sophomore for a long time. For the first choice of the 2021 Draft and his Pistons, it’s time for reflection: do we operate right away, or do we let young Cade rest?

That must be pissing off Michigan basketball fans. Already not spoiled by the awful record of their Pistons (5 wins – 15 losses), they now see Cade Cunningham on the sidelines as they waited for him to hatch on the Detroit floor. And the leader must now decide on the best path to recovery.

Two options are available to Cade if we are to believe The Athletic :

  • 1) take a rest and let the injury heal as naturally as possible. How long would it take? 4 to 6 weeks off, then reassessment, and if everything is ok 4 to 6 weeks back in shape.
  • 2) opt for the operation, a more radical solution that would keep the young star off the pitch for a longer period, potentially the rest of the season. However, an operation offers better guarantees of full recovery, especially at his age, and dragging out a badly treated wound over the long term would be particularly unwise.

“If he was my patient, I would present him with both options and let him choose whichever he prefers. Considering the risk/benefit ratio of surgery, I think most young NBA players in his situation would choose surgery. » Deepak Chona, physician and founder of SportsMedAnalytics for The Athletic

While the final decision is of course up to the first concerned, it would seem that the Pistons want to urge Cunningham to opt for the surgery. Not necessarily surprising news knowing that the Detroit franchise – currently in last place in the Eastern Conference – is probably more aiming for the first pick of the 2023 Draft than the Larry O’Brien trophy. Especially when you know that a certain Victor Wembanyama, considered by many to be the “best prospect in history”, will soon land in the NBA. So if you noticed the squadron of Leclerc tanks parked in front of Little Caesars Arena, you now understand why.

Big air conditioning in Detroit for two weeks, which continues more with Killian Hayes injury. Without Cade Cunningham for quite a while, now we’ll have to find another source of entertainment. We are counting on rookie Jaden Ivey for that, but we will have to remember to hide the score from the children.
