Optimizing Adult Vaccination Coverage: Replace VPC 13 – VPP 23 Regimen with VPC 20 Alone

2023-09-05 14:58:23

At the end of its assessment, the HAS estimated that the benefits conferred by the addition of 7 serotypes as well as a simplification of the vaccination schedule justifies the preferential use of the VPC 20 vaccine alone to replace the VPC 13 – VPP 23 regimen currently in force. These last two vaccines are therefore no longer recommended for adults.

The objective is to improve vaccination coverage, which is currently very insufficient among eligible adults.

Caution: given the more intense and longer lasting immunity following an injection of a conjugate vaccine (compared to that observed with VPP 23), the need for revaccination with a subsequent dose of PCV 20 has not yet been established.

A catch-up campaign is not necessary. Adults who have already received one or more pneumococcal vaccines will continue their vaccination schedule as follows:

– those who received a single dose of PCV 13 or PCV 23 receive a dose of PCV 20 if the previous vaccination dates back more than 1 year;

− those already vaccinated with the VPC 13 – VPP 23 sequence may receive an injection of VPC 20 within 5 years of the previous injection.
